Coir Industry in India

Coco coir is a natural waste product of the coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera) and is the most adaptable organic growing medium available at present.

In India, coconut is primarily a food crop, which produces about one-fourth of the world’s coconuts each year. Coir is a highly renewable resource that can be consistently harvested from the same coconut tree each year.

Once harvested, the whole coconut is separated into kernel and husk, where the kernel is used either directly as food or processed further into food products or oil. The coconut shell is converted to carbon and activated carbon for use in water and air filtration systems. The husk goes to fibre mills where the coir fibre is extracted. The following are the coir products produced in India sustainably.

Coir is a 100% organic naturally occurring fiber derived from a renewable resource of coconut husk. Naturally resistant to rot, moulds and moisture. It is hard and the strongest among all natural fibres, spun and woven into different products including coco/coir peat, Coir Pots, Coir Mats, Coir Rugs, Geo-textiles, Coir Yarn and many more.

1. Coco/Coir Peat Briquettes- A Sustainable Alternative for Sphagnum Peat

Coir pith is a by-product of the coir fibre processing industry. The processed coir pith resembles peat and has got many characteristics as that of sphagnum peat, the most common potting media used in horticulture and hence it is commercially known as coco peat.

Coco peat has become internationally recognized as an ideal soil amendment and component of soilless container media for horticultural plants. Coco peat finds use in propagation methods, hydroponic system of plant cultivation, cultivation of glass house plants, soil conditioning, lawn making etc. Coco Peat Briquettes make the best growing medium for plants, especially flowers. Cocopeat Briquettes retain moisture, store nutrients, and release them gradually to plant roots to promote plant growth.

2. Coir Pots- As Planters

These elegantly moulded coir fibre baskets, primarily available in a spherical shape, serve as perfect liners for planters. Filled with rich coir pith or husk chips, they create an ideal growing medium for climbing vines and hanging plants. Versatile and attractive. Their versatility and striking design make them a must-have for agricultural settings and roof gardens alike, effectively elevating the aesthetic of any green space.

Staining is a common concern with all-natural fibre rugs. However, coir rugs have a darker tone that can effectively hide stains, and their durability makes them resistant to wear. These versatile natural fibre rugs, carpets, and tiles are ideally placed indoors in areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, offices, hallways, entryways, stairways, boutique shops, or other commercial settings where both durability and a natural aesthetic are desired.

5. Coir Geo Textiles- 100% Bio-degradable and environmentally friendly

Coir geotextiles are best and effective option for combating soil erosion by retaining soil quality. They offer sturdy support to the soil, fostering the growth of lush and vibrant vegetation. Their natural ability to absorb water ensures that the topsoil remains consistently moist, creating an ideal environment for thriving plant life.

6. Coir Yarn

Coir Yarn stands out not just for its versatility but also for its remarkable durability. Crafted from natural fibres that boast impressive resistance to water and rot, it is an ideal choice for outdoor projects that require longevity.
